Parama Iswari

Parameswari is a term used to refer to the leading woman in the Javanese royal system. The term has been used since the 9th century and has been preserved in the collective memory of the archipelago's culture until the 21st century. The position of parameswari and the associated female leadership are often associated with sakti, a name that binds the king and a power that transcends its limits.

Historical reality does not always align with social consciousness. Stereotypical discourse within certain communities seems to erode perspectives. Parameswari, as a woman, is often associated with male personas and labeled as second-class citizens.

From a chronological approach, the narrative of Parameswari as a woman spanning history is encapsulated within a cultural context. The impressions of Parameswari's activities, collected and compiled in one exhibition space, carry the intention for women to be able to adaptively redefine their existence. The context of women as part of the military, cultural initiators, and social activists continues to change and transform according to today's relevance.

Ultimately, the Yogyakarta Palace does not specifically construct a dialogue of resistance against feminist dogma, which is still not fully understood. The focus tends to center on historical data as a means to explore the actions and reactions of a queen as a woman. Women are not static entities but rather situations that continue to evolve. They are power and sovereignty that coexist. They are autonomous beings not dictated by others but performances that require continuous interpretation.
